SVENSKA: Hej Frances — Past and Presence är ett pågående samarbete mellan mig och konstnären Ebba Bohlin som undersöker platsers landskap, historia och ekologi. Under sommaren visar vi en utställning på Öland, en långsmal ö i Östersjön nära Sveriges östkust.
Havet omger den smala landremsan på båda sidor, luften är klar och ljuset starkt. Under sommarens heta soliga dagar blir skuggan i Trollskogen, där vi arbetat, en välsignelse. Platsen ligger högst upp i norr på ön, en udde vänd mot horisonten.
ENGLISH: Hi Frances — I’ll begin by writing to tell you about Past and Presence: an ongoing collaboration between me and the artist Ebba Bohlin that investigates the landscape, history and ecology of places. During the summer, we are showing an exhibition on Öland, a long narrow island in the Baltic Sea near the east coast of Sweden.
The sea surrounds the narrow strip of land on both sides, the air is clear and the light bright. During the hot sunny days of summer, the shade in the Trollskogen, where we worked, becomes a blessing. The place is at the top in the north of the island, a headland facing the horizon.
Längst ut mot havet gör jag verket ”Vändpunkt”, hit kommer den som följer stigen så långt det går. Genom tallskogen, längs med havet, förbi järnåldersgravarna och den gamla kultplatsen. Verket pekar ut var på horisonten solen går ner och upp under årets kortaste natt, och hur den sedan förflyttat sig fram till utställningens slut vid höstdagjämningen.
At the far end towards the sea, I will show the work “Vändpunkt” (Turning Point). Out here comes the one who follows the path as far as it goes. Through the pine forest, along the sea, past the Iron Age graves and the old cult site. The work points out where on the horizon the sun sets and rises during the shortest night of the year, and how it then moves until the end of the exhibition near the autumnal equinox.

Du står nu på Trollskogens nordligaste utpost, vänd mot horisonten. Här slutar udden, och långt bort på andra sidan havet finns Oxelösund. Vid sommarsolståndet den 21 juni kan du se solens nedgång kl 21:52 och uppgång kl 03:56 framför dig under årets kortaste natt. Sakta kryper mörkret närmare och vid höstdagjämningen den 23 september går solen ner rakt i väster kl 18:50 och upp rakt i öster kl 06:40. Riktningarna finns på den runda skivan framför dig.
Verket Vändpunkt är ett utmärkande av en särskild plats. Det utgår från den längtan som får en att ta sig så långt bort det går, till den yttersta utposten.

Turning Point (2023)
You are now standing at Trollskogen’s northernmost outpost, facing the horizon. The cape ends here, and far away on the other side of the sea is Oxelösund. At the summer solstice on June 21, you can see the sun set at 9:52 PM and rise at 3:56 AM in front of you during the shortest night of the year. Darkness slowly comes closer and at the autumnal equinox on September 23, the sun sets directly in the west at 18:50 and rises directly in the east at 06:40. You find the directions on the round disc in front of you.
The work Turning Point is a marking of a special place. It comes out of the longing that makes you get as far away as possible, to the outermost outpost.
